I sat down with a scientist with 25+ years of industry experience to talk about how PhDs can better prepare for careers beyond academia (Part 4).
Here’s what he said:
🧪 In academia, success often means figuring things out on your own.
🤝 In industry, success depends on how well you collaborate with others.
There’s a critical mindset shift PhDs need to make:
Independence → Interaction
That doesn’t mean you lose your autonomy.
It means realizing that teamwork isn’t a last resort — it’s how work gets done.
🎙️ In Episode 4 of this series, 20-2-1: How to Prepare for Industry, Dave Giltner and I explore how to reframe “collaboration” — and how PhDs can start practicing real teamwork, even before they leave grad school.
